FORTIS Plasma CNC Features
Collision and Material Detection System
Maker Store’s innovative Collision and Material Detection System for the FORTIS Plasma CNC machine represents a leap forward in automated safety and precision cutting technology. The Collision Detection System detects the collision of the 35mm plasma torch with the workpiece and halts the system, preventing damage to the torch, workpiece and machine. If your plasma cutter is not equipped with an Ohmic Sensor or its not working, this system can detect the material as well to initiate cutting. One of the Inductive sensors of this system is specifically used for material detection. The FORTIS Plasma CNC Kit comes with this Collision and Material Detection System. Key features:
- Multi-Sensor Array:
- Utilises a network of 3 strategically placed LJ12A3-AX NPN inductive sensors around the plasma torch
- 3 inductive sensors work in conjunction for comprehensive detection
- Instant Response:
- Works with MyPlasm CNC controller to stop the machine operation upon collision detection
- Can resume operation after clearing obstruction
- Easy Maintenance:
- Modular design allows for easy sensor replacement if needed
Note: Collision Detection System does not include the plasma cutter (offered separately).
Rigid Gantry Plates allow two clearance configurations
Use of Robust 25×50 and 10×20 Cable Drag Chains
Knife Bed
Maker Store’s custom-designed knife bed for the FORTIS Plasma CNC machine gives another edge to the machine. There’s nothing like this Knife Bed in the market. Traditional Knife Beds suffer from rattling which sometimes results in cutting inaccuracies. However, FORTIS’s Knife Bed keeps the steel blades in tension at all times which results in no rattling and enhances the cutting accuracy. The modular construction comprises easily replaceable steel blade sections that are tensioned placing the blades around the 25mm M8 Cap Head Bolts.
Custom Ball Screw Brackets
Pinion Pivot Mechanism
Maker Store developed a new pivot mechanism for the Helical Gear Rack and Pinion that is more sturdy compared to the pivot mechanism used in machines like MakerBee and Ox-GEAR. This new pivot mechanism maintains constant tension between Helical Pinion mounted on the motor shaft, and Helical Rack using a custom Rod End that has a threaded hole.

FORTIS Plasma CNC Add-Ons
The FORTIS Plasma CNC can be paired with the following add-ons to suit different requirements. Please note these add-ons are not included in the kit and can be bought separately.
Plasma Torch Clamp
This specialised plasma torch clamp ensures secure and accurate holding of 35mm plasma torch, contributing significantly to FORTIS Plasma machine’s cutting quality. This clamp is made from 20 mm thick Al 6063 – T5. This clamp mounts on the Z-Axis Plate and can also be mounted on 20×60, 20×80 and C-Beam V-Slots.
Table
The Table for FORTIS CNC 1000X1500mm is constructed using durable 40 Series T-slot aluminium extrusion, providing a solid and stable foundation for the CNC machine. This robust frame is designed to support heavy-duty cutting tasks while minimizing vibrations, which helps maintain precision and accuracy during operation. The legs of the table can be easily attached to the Custom Foot Brackets of the FORTIS using M8 hardware.
Plasma Cutter
14 Pin CNC Interface Plug Kit
The Thermacut 14 Pin CNC Interface Plug Kit is a high-quality connector solution designed for seamless integration between plasma cutters and CNC systems. This kit ensures reliable communication and control, making it an essential accessory for advanced plasma cutting operations. This kit allows connection between the THC interface of Myplasm CNC System and the Thermacut Extrafire Plasma Arc Cutting Systems for effortless control using Myplasm CNC software.
FORTIS Plasma CNC Machine: Engineered using Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
All the custom brackets and plates used in the FORTIS Plasma CNC machine have been tested using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This advanced computational method played a crucial role in refining the machine’s design, allowing for virtual testing and optimisation before physical prototyping. The physical prototyping further helped the Maker Store engineers to optimise the design for optimal performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I cut?
Is a Plasma Cutter included in the price? The base price of the FORTIS Plasma CNC does not include a plasma cutter, giving you the flexibility to either supply your own or purchase one. Recommended Options: You can opt for a Thermacut plasma cutter, available in single-phase or three-phase models. A three-phase system is ideal for cutting thicker materials, offering more power and efficiency. These units connect seamlessly to the FORTIS Plasma CNC via a 50:1 voltage divider for precise operation. Choosing the Right Plasma Cutter: If you prefer a different plasma cutter, consider the following factors to ensure compatibility and optimal performance:
- Price Range: Plasma cutters vary in cost from $400 to $8,000, which often reflects their capabilities.
- Power Supply: Ensure compatibility with your power system:
- 240V single-phase or
- 400V three-phase with the correct breaker size.
- Amperage: A minimum of 40 amps is required for effective cutting.
- Duty Cycle: Check the duty cycle, which indicates the percentage of time over a 10-minute interval the plasma cutter can run at a specific amperage without overheating.
- Air Flow/Input: Ensure your air compressor meets the plasma cutter’s minimum airflow requirements.
- Air Quality: Use clean, dry air, as moisture can negatively affect cut quality.
- Vertical Torch Compatibility: Ensure your torch setup supports vertical cutting for precision.
- Voltage Divider: Plasma cutters should support 20:1 or 50:1 voltage divider connections. For safety, a 1:1 connection is best converted to a safer voltage using a divider.
By keeping these considerations in mind, you can select the plasma cutter that best suits your needs while ensuring seamless integration with the FORTIS Plasma CNC. What software is included or recommended? The MyPlasm controller by Proma Elektronika comes with access to MiniCAD and MyPlasm motion control software, covering key aspects of the CNC cutting workflow:

What safety measures do I need to keep mind of? To ensure safe and efficient operation of your FORTIS Plasma CNC, follow these essential safety measures: General Safety Practices:
- Always supervise the machine while it is in operation; never leave it running unattended.
- Limit access to the workspace during operation, allowing only authorized and trained personnel to enter.
- Ensure the work area has proper ventilation, particularly when cutting materials like aluminium, to avoid exposure to harmful fumes.
- Avoid cutting aluminium-lithium alloys near water, as this can cause a dangerous reaction that may result in fire.
- Wear safety goggles or a face shield specifically designed for plasma cutting to protect against sparks and debris.
- Ensure everyone present in the room also uses appropriate eye protection when the plasma cutter is active.
- Use heat-resistant gloves and protective clothing to guard against burns and flying metal fragments.
- Keep a safe distance from the cutting area and avoid placing your hands or body near the CNC while it’s running.
- Ensure adequate airflow around the CNC controller to prevent overheating.
- Handle materials carefully both before and after cutting to avoid injury from sharp edges or residual heat.
- Allow sufficient time for the machine and cut materials to cool before handling them.
- Perform regular maintenance and inspections to keep the machine in optimal and safe working condition.
