Gears and Racks

A gear and rack system is a type of mechanical arrangement used to convert rotational motion into linear motion, or vice versa. It consists of two main components: a gear and a rack.

Gear

A gear is a rotating mechanical component with teeth that mesh with the teeth of another gear or a rack. Gears are typically cylindrical in shape and can have various types of teeth configurations, such as spur, helical, bevel, or worm gears. When one gear rotates, it transfers rotational motion and torque to the other gear or the rack it meshes with.

Rack

A rack is a straight, toothed bar or rod that meshes with the teeth of a gear. Unlike gears, racks do not rotate; instead, they move linearly along their axis when engaged with a rotating gear. The teeth on the rack mesh with the teeth of the gear, causing the rack to move either forward or backward depending on the direction of rotation of the gear.
