What is CNC Machining?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a cutting-edge manufacturing technique that allows for precise control of machine tools, such as mills, lathes, and routers, from creating complex automotive components to even DIY projects, CNC machining has revolutionized countless industries and opened up new possibilities in the world of design and production.

If you want to excel in CNC machining, it is essential to get a fundamental understanding of CAD (Computer-Aided Design), CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing), gcode Sender Software, and CNC machine setup. Our introduction to CNC machining class covers all these aspects, providing you with a solid foundation to kickstart your CNC maker journey.

Here’s everything you need to know about our upcoming event:

You DO NOT need to bring a computer, own a CNC machine, have previous experience, or commit to a purchase at the end of this course. Our instructors, Tawanda and Sahib, will guide you through the process of designing your part and converting it into a gcode file using Vectric VCarve. During the event, our instructors will take you through the entire process of creating a part, from concept to final masterpiece.

 


Main Topics Covered during our First CNC Saturday

  1. Design(CAD): The first step in CNC machining is creating a 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model of the part or component you want to manufacture. This will be done using Vectric VCarve Software.
  2. Programming (CAM): Once the design is complete, the next step is to create a CNC program. This involves converting the 3D CAD model into a series of instructions that the CNC machine can read and follow. The program will specify the cutting tools to be used, the cutting paths, and the cutting speeds and feeds.
  3. Setup: The CNC machine needs to be set up with the appropriate cutting tools and materials. The material is secured to the machine’s work table, and the cutting tools are loaded into the machine’s spindle. We will use our OutBack CNC Machine to achieve create a masterpiece.
  4. Machining: The machine’s controller follows the programmed instructions to cut and shape the material into the desired part or component.
  5. Inspection: Once the machining process is complete, the finished part or component is inspected to ensure it meets the required specifications.
